Going on holiday with a newborn

One of my best friends is getting married in Madiera (a few hours flight) on 21 June of this year. I am due 14 May. To get to the wedding would probably need to fly 18 or 20 june. I really, really want to be there for her big day. She isn't putting pressure on at all and so far I have RSVPd no but part of me still thinks it will work! Anyone taken a very small baby on holiday with any advice? Thanks x
