Getting a gift

I highly doubt this is a good idea, but I was going to buy a really good guy friends of mine some Hero Mesh for his head. (I'm talking about lacrosse lol) I was going to talk to his mom to see what kind he gets and etc...but I've been replaying this idea in my head for the past few days and I don't know if I should go through with it. It's not like his birthday is anytime soon and I've basically learned everything I know about lax for him cause he knows my sports. I feel like it would be really out of the blue, plus idek if he would want hero mesh. It's got pretty good reviews...but I don't want it to be awkward or for our friendship to all of a sudden dissipate. Erm, help? (Pic of hero mesh below lol)
