Does age really matter for toys

Question

I want to buy my step son a nerf gun and he is 5 turning 6 in april. The 6+ air warriors ultra tek nerf gun just looks and feels cheap so I want to get him the zombie strike nerf gun but it says it's for ages 8+
Does that really matter? 
Sorry I'm new to buying toys for children... didn't have to worry bout this kind of stuff when he was 3...

Personally I don't think it matters , I think it has the age thing because some kids put small parts in their mouths. If he doesn't do that it should be fine. I had three little brothers growing up I got shot with those things millions of times lol

You know your child's maturity level better than anyone else. If you think he can handle that gun buy him that gun.

My 7 yr old is small & he has the zombie one. I dont think the age on there matters as long as they can figure it out & responsible enough not to aim it at someone's eye kinda thing ya know.

My son just turned 7 and he got that zombie gun for Christmas. I had to take it from him because he kept shooting his sisters with it, and it's powerful enough to hurt.

I don't think it matters. Most parents have a better idea of what their kids can handle and as long as you're watching him, it should matter.

My son had trouble pulling the trigger at first and keeping up with the bullets because he misplaces everything. But other than that, after he got use to it had a blast with it.. Me not so much😂😂

Make sure the triggers not too hard to pull, or any of its too hard for him. Other than that, I think it's fine. My 4 yr old has 2 nerf guns. One of them, he has to use two fingers to pull the trigger. He loves them. He sets up empty water bottles and his action figures for target practice.

No at 5 and 6 I think it's not that big of a deal. The nerf gun may be about as big as he is lol but shouldn't hurt. He's old enough
