can you start birth control the first day of your period?

I read that you can either take it the first day you get your period or the Sunday after you get it. does it really matter or ? ??? I'm on it for acne problems so does anybody know how long it will take for me to see a difference in my skin??

It's safe to start it at any point in your cycle but doctors have different opinions on what is best.

If you start on the same day as your period you are protected immediately.

Sunday starting is more...traditional I guess? It means that you will likely not have your period on weekends which is nice. And the days in your packet will match better.

When I started my doctor told me to start the next day, meaning I had to wait 7 days before being protected. It also may have messed with my period slightly more because I was about halfway through my cycle. However, if your period just passed it is better to have to wait the 7 days than to wait longer for your period to start.

Answer

Usually the doctor giving you the mess can tell you when you should start. Is usually is one or the other, but it certainly can't hurt to verify with your doctor
