Is it hypocritical?

Question

That people will tell restaurant workers or any other minimum wage job employees to "Get a real job" but if everyone stopped working jobs like those all hell would break loose.

It's always weird to me how people look down on people in customer service positions.

I don't know about you, but I like to go out and eat sometimes. And I like to have tech support help me with issues. And I like it when there's someone behind the cash register at the store.

I appreciate all of those people and absolutely feel like they have real jobs.

I wouldn't call it hypocritical but I would call it rude, insensitive, and ignorant. First of all, why isn't working in a restaurant or a minimum wage job a real job?  Second, you are correct. We need people to do these jobs.

Very hypocritical. I was a waitress for 15 years, PT and FT, and let me say it was one of the hardest jobs I've had. The job itself was not hard, but dealing with snobby, unappreciative and disrespectful people was the hard part.

Im mixed on this because I think  that if you can survive on $9 to $11 an hour then fine work whatever job you want.  But by no means do I believe that restaurant workers should earn $15+ unless you are a manager or supervisor.  I grew up poor with my mom working in restaurants all of her life and I saw how she struggled with limited education and opportunities in the late 80's-90's in inner city Detroit",  Dexter/Linwood baby and then Highland Park.  I remember bussing Food stamps at the corner store and taking my Medicaid card to school to get free lunch.  Unfortunately  it was all due to the decisions my mom made as a young woman.  She was a child in the home with both of her parents and  my grandfather was a professor at a university. So she had the opportunity to strive for something more and have the support from those who loved her but she chose to the life we had.  So while I empathize with some of the people who have to work these jobs, but I also believe that there is also those who cause there own struggle are not moving to something better because the just don't want to.  I knew growing up in the situation we were in that I wanted more because of the life I had to live as a child. That's why I went to college, I wanted a career instead of just a job, and now I am able to take care of my mother and my family comfortably and not struggle. So really all I can do is Pray that people get clarity and see that their potential.

Fast food and restaurant work isn't easy, and there are many health & safety codes you always have to keep in mind. I think fast food and restaurant workers get more criticism than any other profession out there. If counts as a real job, HOWEVER minimum wage it is not meant to support a family off of. It's meant to be a stepping stone to a better career.

Restaurant work is real work. Just because it's not a nine to five office position with a salary and a 401k doesn't make it any less of a job. A job is a job! My boyfriend works as a chef in a restaurant, and it's more than "just a job" to him. It's what he loves to do, it's what he takes pride in. He would never be happy anywhere but in the kitchen, cooking amazing dishes. The compliments he receives on his food mean everything in the world to him. It's also a reminder that there are people out there who appreciate what he does, even if others don't think it's that important.

Minimum wage jobs were never meant to be life long careers. And most people that tell them to get a real job are only saying it after the worker has complained repeatedly about how little their pay is, and want a large raise. If these jobs are all they can get, they will periodically get raises and can work hard for promotions. But it's not right for them to want to make as much as someone that has gone to college or a trade school. Alot of places besides franchise can't afford to pay employees that rate. Therefore resulting in more unemployment and businesses closing. And franchises that could afford it, will find more cost effective ways. Some fast food places now have computers you enter your own order into instead of telling a cashier

Yes. The hardest work I ever did (and some of the most dangerous) was minimum wage.

So to tell me to get a "real" job like my father did all the time. I stepped aside and said "If this isn't a real job then you do it for a day."

He was exhausted. Never said I didn't have a real job again.
