You normally surge during the day. Test in the afternoon. 
Between 12-2 and again around 4-6pm. 
Now, so I don't upset anyone, by no means am I the opk test strip rule maker. This is what worked for my 3 pregnancies.

You never want to use fmu. The reason is because while you sleep, your LH production drops off by quite a bit. Once you wake up, it takes a while for LH production to rise back up. This is why you should test in the afternoon and evening. If you only test in the morning, you are almost always going to get inaccurate readings and most likely miss your surge.

Depends on what you're using. Clearblue instructs to use first morning urine. Whereas the OPK strips are better used later in the day when the hormone LH shows up better.

I tested twice a day, once with first morning urine and the second mid afternoon (usually after work between 4-5 pm). I surged in hr afternoon and by the next am it was gone so I'm glad I did it twice a day!
