Vitex?

Question

I just started taking vitex about a week ago exactly, and didn't think this cycle had worked...but boy was I wrong.. I'm 4w3d and worried about what to do? Like is it okay to stop it since I only was taking it for a week, is it even in full effect? Just worried about miscarriage if I stop. I also have pcos so kinda worried...

Just read an article that it can possibly help prevent miscarriages that may be due to low progesterone, it said it was safe during pregnancy, but to ask your doctor! HTH baby dust to you!!

I've read it is not safe during pregnancy but some women provided testimonials that they stayed on it for the first trimester and everything came out fine.  I took it (stupidly) from before ovulation and quit taking it right before I got my BFP (maybe 3 days) as I didn't think I was pregnant due to spotting (which was actually implantation bleeding).  I ended up being pregnant but miscarried at 6.5 weeks.  I have no idea if the vitex had anything to do with it, but I vowed to myself to never use supplements again and I got pregnant naturally last month.   I wish you the best and will pray for a positive outcome in your situation!   Happy and healthy 9 months!

Just speaking from my experience as a clinical herbalist, most herbs are going to have some warning aginst use while pregnant. That's because there haven't been enough (or any) studies to determine their effect on a pregnant person. But that doesn't mean they are harming the baby.

Vitex is a hormone regulator without being a phyto-estrogen (plant-based estrogen). So it CAN im some cases prevent miscarriage where hormones are a factor. It will not prevent miscarriages when there is something wrong with baby. If it were me, I would continue to take it throughout the first trimester, or I might taper it off over a 1-2 week period.

Also, be aware that there are herbs that are sometimes paired with Vitex that are definitely NOT safe in pregnancy. If you are taking a blend and it contains angelica, dong quai, blue cohosh, black cohosh, parsley, or licorice, you should discontinue use immediately because most of those herbs are classified as emmenegogues (causes menstrual bleeding) and/or abortifacients (causes miscarriage).
