What does "a break" really mean?

About a week ago my boyfriend started saying I deserved better than him (totally out of nowhere). And when I asked him if we were breaking up he said he didn't know what to do and just kept saying I deserve more than what he could give me. He has a baby boy and it was getting hard finding time where we could see each other and I think that might have been a big part of it. I kept reassuring him that I was okay but he was still really on the fence. After a day of this back and forth we tried saying goodbye but he kept eating he didn't want to end it and we ended up just "taking a break" and I'm just confused. I don't know what this means or where we are or how to handle it. Do I move on? Do I wait a little bit? Do I text him or wait for him to text me? I'm just lost with so many questions. I really don't know what to do here.
