How far is too far?

Question

So I just started watching Bates Motel on Netflix. In the very first episode the mother is almost raped. After she and Norman fight off her attacker, he says "You liked it." Am I the only one who thinks that rape is not entertainment? I don't feel like this is a case of "being offended by everything." A lot of movies and tv shows have this now and completely without warning. I don't know, it just feels wrong to show something like that. 
Edit: As someone who was raped at 16, I don't need rude comments about how it's a part of life. I'm well aware that it will still happen whether or not it is shown on tv. I just don't think it should be made into something so normal or used for entertainment.

Okay, so when it first came out they had a free download for the first episode on iTunes. It gave me such bad anxiety, I had to turn it off. I've NEVER had such a bad reaction to something like that. Never finished that episode and never watched the rest of the series.

Rape is something that happens and awareness if fine. Portraying it in films is fine. I just couldn't handle it.

I get what you are saying BUT do you even understand the super weird relationship between Norman and his mom?   It gives the characters a good stepping stone of their relationship..trust me, keep watching!

it is mimicking physco back from the 60s . I don't think it's down playing the severity of rape or anything it's playing out a real scenario that happen.  It's hard to watch but they even have a warning before every episode.

I have conflicted thoughts about this.  I sometimes have really bad reactions to rape scenes, but then other times nothing.  I really love Game of Thrones.  It  has had some horrific scenes, but has never upset me.  I think it might be that the more real the whoe thing serms, the more difficult it is to watch.

I don't think showing rape is necessary though.

I haven't seen this particular show, so I can't comment on how well it was handled. I don't however believe that certain topics shouldn't be handled or even graphically depicted because they're upsetting.

I also disagree that it's without warning. It's a show about a serial killer so that's one indication. First it should be subject to a content rating which usually break down into warning subdivisions. Second there's a plethora of websites out there dedicated to media and what it's content. As an example IMDB breaks down this show by episode, and potentially upsetting material.

I love that show, I thought it was kinda weird when he said it, but to be honest with what the show is based on i was not really shocked.

I agree. I don't like how media normalises and trivialises rape by reducing it to an accessory to a person's character.

AHS is a great example of that. I know it's supposed to be shocking, but rape shouldn't be manipulated into being the shock factor of a show. Plus, they tried very hard to get the audience to sympathise with the rapist.

I think in the case of this show, it's used more for the storyline than shock value. Norman and his mother have a very strange relationship and I think this is just part of it. 
Definitely check out the parents guide on IMDb for any other shows or movies.
