Middle, then driver's side.  I know everyone thinks they'd protect baby first, but your instincts are to avoid crashes where you are.

Middle is obviously the safest but honestly most people put it on whichever side is most convenient. If you're alone a lot you might prefer the baby on the passenger side so you can glance back and see them. If you're with someone, then the other side is better so you can reach back if needed and soothe the baby. Just my opinion. I'm pretty sure there's no set law or rule about it.

Middle is safest. If not possible the seat behind the driver is the safest. It's the side of the car that is less likely to be hit.

They say the middle is the safest but really it is about what gives you the correct install. A lot of car seats do not allow bracing or touching the seats in the car in front of it you just need to read your car seat manual so you know  and other important car seat safety stuff like strap position or the chest clip goes

Agree that middle would be safest, but not always possible. 
I believe passenger is next best because it's safer to get them in and out of the car when parked next to a road. 
That being said, if you have another child that might climb out themselves it would probably be best to have the older child on the passenger side and the infant on drivers side. 
This is my first, so I don't know from personal experience. Going by what friends have said 😊
