Give melatonin to kids..?

Question

Who here has young children that have problems sleeping at night and staying on a regular sleep schedule? Have u ever gave ur kids melatonin? My son has probs sleeping last night he slept an hr and slept 5hrs today. On a good schedule he will sleep 12 hrs a night...

I had to take melatonin as a child, I would only suggest giving it to them when they are bouncing off the walls or unable to sleep. Giving melatonin every night will make your child's brain (or an adult) think it's producing enough and stop so They will ultimately depend on it more and will have a lot of sleepless nights if they go without it.

We get the low dose chewables and cut them in half for my 6 year old. Not getting enough sleep can be harmful for children especially if they're spending long days in school.

I gave it to my son for a short while to get him back on a normal schedule after me n his daddy split up. I would break it into small pieces instead of giving him a whole one. He takes it every now n then if he really cant sleep. My cousin is autistic and he's been on it for as long as i can remember.

My son is 3 years old and he consistently wakes at least twice a night. I don't know why but he just doesn't sleep well unless he is snuggled all night. It's just the way he is. 
I wouldn't give him anything synthetic to make him sleep more. Not melatonin or anything else.
Melatonin is a natural hormone and if they're given a synthetic form it can cause their bodies to become dependent on it and stop producing it naturally. It can also cause night terrors and sleep walking...

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by our bodies. If given synthetically it could cause the body to stop producing it naturally and mess up the sleep/wake cycle. Please check with your pediatrician before giving it to your child. I've heard that it works wonders but proceed with caution. :) Best of luck!

I give my son half of a 3mg disolve bleeding tablet which I use a pull splitter to cut in half. He has adhd and his meds cause him to have worse sleep then he does normally not using his medication. My mum suggested it to me, she used to it to my brother when he was younger. She now gives it to my sister but only 1mg and she takes 3mg as well. My son's development pediatrician for his adhd said it was okay to give him to help with the sleep issues he has.

I used to babysit for a family that had a child with autism. He would stay up half the night, and would be very aggressive/abusive towards me if I tried to get him to go to sleep. His mom would tell me to crush up melatonin and put it in his dinner, because he wouldn't take a pill, that's the only way they could give it to him. 
It was a God send!

However, I felt like I was drugging the poor kid, and sometimes he didn't need it. He'd eventually fall asleep without the fits and hitting. 
Every child is different. I definitely wouldn't want a child dependent on it, but it definitely helps...it's all about balance :)
