How did you choose your career?

I'm 24 and I'm smack in the middle of trying to find a career that I love or even start my own business. I really love dancing and doing hair. I really just wanna pick one but not sure which to live on and do long term. Any suggestions,

I originally wanted to do hair too,  but it scared me bc I saw (and still see) so many people putting all that time, money and effort into cosmetology school and then they end up hating it and doing something different with their life. I ended up going to school to be a teacher, I'm glad I did! I get summers off and I have a guaranteed steady income.

I had a completely different career in mind. I planned to be a bush pilot, my parents supported it but suggested I go to university first to have a back up plan as if a medical condition comes up there goes my career. In year 3 of a 4 year degree I took an interest in law. I decided to keep flying but as a hobby and decided to write the LSAT. I did ok and when the time came was accepted to 2 of my top 3 choices. I chose my area of law later after trying out various areas to see what I liked. It can be a really difficult decision. You should decide based on what makes you most happy and what you do well, also considering can I make a living doing this, can I make a sufficient amount to support myself.  Follow your dreams but try to keep a bit of the practical in mind as well. That is my best advice.

Choosing a career that pays little is hard. I do think that having a college degree gives you a leg up if you want to change careers later. I wouldn't recommend going for a masters until you have a clear direction for that degree.

I just got a random job as an admin assistant. After a while, I decided I enjoyed the field my company specializes in and worked my way up to being a researcher/analyst. Now I do it from home while raising my daughter. It's a lot of work, but I make good money and I love it! I'm very lucky!

I have my master's degree in psychology but am currently doing some modeling on the side. Both are my passions and I plan on eventually starting my own practice. It takes time, but I'd go for something you enjoy!

I tried figuring it out while working on undergraduate studies. I changed majors 4 times. Those first two years you get to sample a little of everything.

Omg I am 30 and still dont have a career! I chose something tho that's really interesting and very challenging for me. Since I love science and I also love space and rockets, I chose astronautical or flight test engineer.   have 2 years left of undergrad and just received my associates. Although school isn't for everyone, it could open doors to many other careers (even trade schools/associates degree).

I went to school before I really knew what I wanted to do. I have a double degree in Psychology and Communications  (after spending almost a year in other majors only to find out I HATED the sciences), but I've spent all of my time since college as a nanny and I love it. I wish I hadn't have wasted so much money and time on school because I am not using those degrees at all. I wish I had waited to find my passion before enrolling -- at least then I could have gone for something more closely related to childcare! I am also going to get my real estate license since that's another passion of mine and it's something I can do while I'm at home and with kids. Go with your passion and you'll save tons of time (and money!) -- if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life. :)

Girl, follow your dreams! If you want to do hair then go to school for it. I know I'm NC it takes about 10 months. You can then work in a salon and meet people. Then the more people you meet, you can tell them you are wanting to start a dance business. They would LOVE to send their kids to dance with someone they love and trust. Plus, by then, you could have enough money saved to have your own dance studio and dance studio. It's your life, never settle!

I would say stick with school but also explore your talent so that you have something to fall back on. Definitely stick with school though! You're still young ☺
