Everything happens for a reason?

I was seeing this douche for almost a year. He was so rude to me and he led me on...idk why I fell for him....but at the same time this other guy who goes to my school continuously shows me attention and is really nice . I want to give him a chance but I'm worried about getting heartbroken again and I'm still in the healing process from the other guy as well. Advice???
