Shooting dogs?

I live in the country lots of land for miles around and only dirt roads. Farming is life here. Beef cows, horses, dairy cows, sheep, hogs and chickens- everyone has at least one pasture full of one of the above mentioned.
For as long as I can remember, these are the backroads that people use to drop off their unwanted dogs. They wander up out of nowhere, half starved (or all the way starved), flea infested, and ticks attached to exposed flesh.
We don't have animal control out here. Every farmer or rancher is their own animal control.
These dogs get shot. The ranchers, the farmers.. when they go out in the mornings and evenings to check their livestock and they see these poor confused dogs roaming around their livestock, well.... the die by lead poisoning. It breaks my heart. It shouldnt have to be this way. But what are these farmers and ranchers supposed to do? Their entire life savings is wrapped up in their livestock, they can't afford to have a cow or goat get chased down and killed or hurt by a starved stray dog.
There aren't animal shelters out here, those are in your city, in your town. Look for them. Don't drop off your dog out here and think for one second that Fido will find his fur-ever home on a nice farm. Life is tough out here. Your box of puppies you dropped off, that momma cat with kittens you left by the mailbox at the end of the driveway.. please, it hurts farmers to have to put them down rather than to see them starving. Use your city's shelters, take them there. End of rant. 🐶🐱
