Moving into an apartment....

Okay so this may sound like a stupid question.... But my hubby and I are moving into an apartment and we've never rented/leased so we arent sure how it all works. My question is: I know deposit is due up front, but is first months rent too? Or is that just due at the end of your first month living there? We've called the apartment complex today to try and figure it all out but no answer, they recently renovated and we are trying to move in fast so we just wanna get the money situated.
