Would this upset you?

My husband told me at the beginning of the week that I didn't need to cook Friday because he would be taking me to a fancy restaurant. He said it was a surprise and it was really nice so to dress up. I was excited all week and told all my friends how excited I was for having a romantic date with my hubby. We have 2 kids so it's not that often. We get ready to go and my mom shows up and says surprise I'm taking you to the ballet w/o hubby. I love the ballet, but was immediately disappointed that I wasn't going to dinner with him and that he had lied to me all week. Would you be?

Well I think I'm not a proper judge bc my mom lives far a way and I would be ecstatic if he surprised me with a day alone with her. But if you see her regularly I can see being a little upset but don't let him know. He worked hard to surprise you and give you what he thought would be a stress free fun night.

I get that you're disappointed but his intentions were good. He just had particularly poor execution. LOL.  I have a coworker who dresses in sweats for work every day.  They planned a surprise baby shower for her and got her husband involved.  He told her she had to dress up that day because they were meeting his parents for a nice dinner at 5.  She was thrilled for the shower and relieved she didn't have to go to dinner.  Something similar to that would have been better.

that's weird, why didn't she just tell you she wanted to go with you to the ballet? that's great too, but my hopes would have gotten up to have quality time with my SO.

I understand what you mean.
Its not that it wasn't a nice surprise, it was just the wrong red herring to give you. Spending time with my hubby is the most important thing to me, so when I know I'm gonna get a whole special evening with him I get so excited too!

It's not that I would be mad/upset he lied, sounds like he just wanted to surprise you. I totally would be bummed too! Just look at it from his perspective. He probably thought you'd be super thrilled. It was a nice idea..

I'd be bummed for sure. Especially if you don't get date night often. Intentions were good all around but I'd still be slightly bummed.
