How did you first get help?

I need to see someone ASAP. How do I search for a good psychologist in the area? How does any of that work...

I talked to my doctor and also some teachers to see if they new of anyone. A family friend who is a school nurse recommended my current psychologist who is my favorite of all the ones I've had. Just ask around for recommendations and try to find someone you like

Depends on where you are /how old you are/what you're looking for ...

But typically it involves searching for listing of nearby therapists. You want someone your insurance covers if you have insurance, you can contact them for a list of mental health providers they cover.

You want someone with expertise with your issue,so look for that when choosing. FYI, someone with one or two methods (eg, cbt) is ime better than with multiple, bc they will be more rigorous and faithful to the method which typically has better results than an "eclectic" method. I definitely suggest looking up what is evidence based treatment for your particular issue and finding a specialist in that. It will save you time and money.

Psychologytoday.com has a ton of listings you can search through.

Some places have treatment centers for particular problems, and they will have a bunch of experts on that all in one place. They may do research too which may be helpful if you don't have insurance or want to try experimental treatments. Treatment centers are good too if you want meds + therapy,it is convenient bc your psychiatrist and therapist are able to talk on a regular basis

When you first call any place they will do a phone interview where they ask about all your problems and assess if they can help you. Be ready with a list to go thru of different places, bc usually you'll be turned away from the first few.

I spoke to my English teacher then she contacted my mum and tutor and helped me get counselling! Best decision I've made in a long time. I finished counselling January 2015
