Accidentally pissed off the neighbor!

Shortly after we moved in our neighbor politely asked us to turn the bass down on our audio sound system. We did. We've been in our place 5 months or so and about a month back we finally hooked up our surround sound system. We tried to tailor it to be quieter. Well tonight the neighbor came by again only this time he was furious and was sort of scary. We didn't realize the subwoofer was so intrusive on his side (we live in a townhouse) we didn't even get a chance to explain or apologize, he just wigged out and left. We figured out how to disconnect the subwoofer but keep the speakers working. My question is, should we try and apologize and explain or just leave it alone?
