Nuvaring ring questions

So I've been on Nuva ring for 2 months now. My doctor told me there are two ways to take it, the normal (get your period) way and the continuous way (don't get your period). I've been doing the latter. But recently I've been having a brown discharge and Today it seems I started my period ? But I still have my ring in. And to my knowledge, as long as You have the ring in, you don't get a period ? ?
