First Pelvic Exam - Rectal??

So I'm booked in for my first pelvic exam and am scared. Want to know what usually happens? The nurse mentioned something about a rectal exam on the phone too but I was too worried to ask questions! Please tell me what to expect.

I've never heard anything about a rectal exam, it must've been her first day. LOL! They usually just do a basic breast examination and show you how to check for any lumps in your breast that could lead to breast cancer. Then they will ask you to lay flat and place a speculum inside you to do the vaginal exam. The doctor should tell you everything step by step so your not uncomfortable. But then she will use 2 fingers to feel inside you, and then do a swab with what looks like a long q-tip. Then she might ask if you want any STD testing done if your sexually active. It might feel a little uncomfortable but it won't last long it usually goes pretty quick. Hopefully that helps!

I've had several rectal exams due to chronic health issues and numerous pap smears. Neither hurt or are a big deal! Don't let your nerves take over, it will be over super quickly.

Some Drs do a rectal exam and some don't. It is to check for abnormalities or polyps. Just ask questions at your appointment before the exam.
