Vitamin d supplements for breastfed babies?

Full disclosure...I find it *very* hard to believe that breast milk would be lacking in ANYTHING that baby should need...but we do give our babies D3 because *everyone* in our family takes D3 daily for immune support and flu prevention! The liquid D-Vi-Sol they prescribed for our 1st child is horrid!!! It's full of artificial color and flavor. I can't even stomach the smell, let alone taste! We quickly found a MUCH better supplement and have been giving it to our child for years now. One drop daily is all baby needs. Once she turned 2, we started giving her 2 drops daily. It's colorless and tasteless. You can find it at The Vitamin Shoppe and the like. Hope this helped!

I don't give her the drops, I take a D3 supplement myself. The evidence is that if mom takes 6500 IU a day baby will get her dose. I'm very against drugs and such and I'm unwilling to give her the drops herself but I don't mind taking the three little drops of oil a day. It makes sense because we don't get enough sun (I live too far north).

My own Vitamin D levels are so low. I take supplements, but I'm nowhere near where I need to be yet. When I start nursing again I doubt I'll be providing much Vitamin D for the baby, so drops it is. I've really got to figure out why I'm always so low.

I could never get my son to take the drops. He was just fine and still is super healthy. I beleive they get what they need from breastmilk.

I havent done my research on that, but I am a biologist and from basic knowledge and common sense I would say that if your baby can sun bathe everyday or many days a week then she doesnt need vitamin d supplement. But if you live in a place where it is hard to be in the sun then she might need it, and I would definetly do it through you taking it so it goes through the breastmilk instead of giving it to her (but I dont know if it goes through the milk, would have to look that up). Remember vitamin d is produced in the skin when we sunbathe, so you cant wash with soap afterwords.

I'm breastfeeding baby #4. I've nursed all my kids a minimum of 2 years. This time around is the first I've heard this suggested honestly. Is it a new recommendation or did I just miss something? 
All my kids have been exceptionally healthy. They get sick much less frequently than their peers. So I think they were okay without it.
