He was my best friend

Elisa • Second year student from the University of Manitoba, studying Human Nutritional Science.
We met in grade nine, he sat in front of me in social studies and behind me in math. Eventually a big group of us from the same class all became friends and that was our "group".
He was my high school crush. He turned me down for another girl, who evidently turned him down, but if anything made our relationship better.
For two years in a row, he and I bussed to school every morning and sat in the same spot on the bus every morning and fall asleep leaning on each other, every morning. And we always bussed home together and if the bus was full, he would let me sit first, or if we were really in a crunch on his lap.
We told each other everything. We have kept the same conversation on text open for five years and it didn't matter how late, we would try our hardest to make each other feel better.
He lent me his sweaters when I was cold, and liked to play footsie under the desk. He liked playing with our hands and sneaking up and hugging me from behind, sighing as he rested his head on mine and his arms around my shoulders. People told me they wouldn't be surprised if we ended up together one day and we had a tendency of no matter how far, as long as we were in ears reach we would yell "I love you" and "I love you too" when we were leaving.
Even as we grew up and entered university nothing changed. He would cuddle up and lean on me in compromising positions while we studied and shared my drinks, even though he didn't like the amount of sugar I put in mine.
He liked his coffee black and hates sweets.
He always let me sit down first, and knew just what to say when I needed it.
Now he's into another girl and midday cuddles turned into sitting at opposite ends of the table, to leaving before saying good bye, to no hugs and no more I love you's, no more texts and no more late nights.
He was my best friend and I really did mean it when I yelled back "I love you too".
