Acceptable time frame?

Question

Recently I opened up my home to my family till they find a place after being blind sighted with a 30 day notice (no luck in finding a place within time) when the owner of the home they were renting sold it. There's not a problem with them staying here and they are actively looking for a place. I've never been in this situation and would never leave them without a roof over their heads but what would you think is an acceptable amount of time?

I wouldn't give them a time frame if you know they are actively looking. If they were being a bunch of bums, not cleaning up after themselves, not working, and not trying to find a house then I would tell them they have a certain amount of time. But as long as they are trying and being respectful, I wouldn't let them go homeless. Taking a house can find time, so maybe you should set up some boundaries and arrangements just in case something were to go wrong.

It depends on their situation but I'd say 2-3 months tops for me... I don't like switching up my routine and feeling uncomfortable not my own home.

Well, you want them to jump on the first acceptable place they can find. But depending on your area and prices that might take more than 3 months and it may not be their fault.

Just keep an eye on them and make sure they continue to look, chances are they don't like the situation either so hopefully that won't be a issue. Maybe even help them look.

I'm in a similar situation now, I've let my sister and her boyfriend live at my house since they came back off an internship for her boyfriend. It has been a straight pain in the ass, they have definitely been here longer than intended, they don't clean up after theirselves, they eat whatever and don't replenish so more is coming out of my pocket for this, etc. Hes supposed to be looking for a job but turns down any offer he gets if it's not up to his standards(he's a college grad and I think personally looking for the perfect job forever instead of something to start off of). I just recently told them they need to be out by the end of May. It'll be almost 6 months of them being here and with a baby on the way I need them to clear out of the room. So I'd say 3 months is acceptable, any longer is pushing it.

Ideally I would say 2 to 3 months but having been though similar situations on both sides. The helping and the one being helped. 
3 to 4 months is more realistic. One time it took me and my husband 6mths when we moved back from another state, to find a job and a decent place to rent that was within our budget and in a decent area.

If they are trying I agree there should be no time frame. Sometimes finding a rental is tougher than expected. If they were laying around, making messes, bumming, or causing unnecessary drama it would be a totally different story.

As someone else said IMO if you know they're actively looking for a place then I don't think a time line is necessary. You telling them "be gone in a month" is only adding stress to the situation it's not going to make a house pop up quicker if they're actually searching. Now if they where just being bumbs sleeping on your couch then you should so they would get a move on.
