Mastitis?

I think I have mastitis or a clogged duct. FTM of a 2 week old baby and one of my breasts is really really tender. And every time I pump I only get about a fourth of an ounce out of that breast and I always get 1 ounce out of the other one. I still use both breasts to feed, but I think there's a problem with that one. Will it clear up on its own or should I go to the doctor? And what are some things I can do at home to open the duct up to get more milk out?

My right breast seemed to always clog when I nursed my daughter. I used a warm compress and found the knot/clog and would rub the area. I'd have my husband massage the area, too. Then I'd hand express out of that breast. I always ended up with what looked like a white string coming out of my nipple, then out would shoot the milk and the pain would disappear.

If you have a fever and can't find a knot or the clogged duct, get to the hospital.

Lots of nursing/pumping, heating pads  and cold cabbage leaves left in the bra when you''re not pumping or heating can help too, but if you are getting a fever go get medical help.

Sounds like a clogged duct. Use warm wash cloth on your breast. Also, if you take a hot shower and massage the area can help. I've had that and I've also had mastitis. With mastitis your breast can feel hot to the touch, be extremely sore and possibly feel some pulsing if not milked. With mastitis you'd also need to get on antibiotics to fight the infection.

Go to doctor, you might need antibiotics to fight the infection. I had it with my son and it was awful. I had flu like symptoms and sooo much pain. Watch for a red spot or rash on your breast as well that is hot to the touch.

I would go to the doctor. And keep trying to express the milk. Warmth will help. Facing the warm shower should help. Take Tylenol for pain. Check your temperature. Try to increase your fluid intake. You can also get help from a lactation consultant.

Josephine has good advice. You really need to empty that breast as best as you can. Keep pumping, breastfeeding, etc. Before breastfeeding you can use a warm, wet washcloth on your breast for about 15 minutes. This will help draw out your milk and get some good flow so you can empty. You may just need antibiotics, but try as best as you can to get it all out!

Ouch! Hot shower and lots of rubbing while pumping/feeding! Even cold therapy helps too... Rub rub rub! If you can't release pressure I would go to the doctors ASAP.
