How much, if any, do you tip the maid/s when staying at a hotel / cabin?

We have never really tipped when staying at a hotel. I never even knew that was a thing people did until recently... We spent 3 nights in a cabin this weekend, and my husband and I decided to leave a tip. This conversation les to speculation of what the "norm" is for tipping a maid.

We left $10. They don't come in at all during your stay here. It's a small 1 bedroom cabin, with a loft, 1.5 bath, and a full kitchen. We stripped the bedding off the beds, put all our towels in a pile, washed /put up all the dishes, cleaned everything out of the fridge, & took out the trash.

Just curious what your thoughts are. Do you tip all on the first night at a hotel? A little every night? Just at the end of your stay?... What if you stay in a cabin, like our situation this weekend, what would you do?

I didn't know this was a thing either. Usually maids won't touch money I thought? Because the risk of someone claiming they stole their forgotten money?

I'm a housekeeper. We definitely appreciate when people leave tips. The thing we don't appreciate is when people trash rooms and leave like change. And I saw someone mention a note, I always appreciate those. I just hate I can never physically thank the guest for being so kind. Most days are rough, especially at the hotel I work at. So I appreciate all the little things. It makes it worth it. There's a lot of days where I just cannot deal with the crap I see. Or how people treat me, so a little note or when people pass by and thank us for all we do, really makes my day so much better.

I'm so confused on who we're supposed to tip and who we're not. Why do we tip hotel maids? Don't they make a regular hourly wage? I can understand tipping waiters who make $2.13 an hour and are dependent on tips but why maids?

I've stayed in hotels while being out of town and honestly I never knew it was a thing so I've never left a tip. But I also don't make a terrible mess and I clean up after myself

I don't tip much but I know every little bit makes a difference. I don't have them change the sheets and I make my own bed, reuse the towels etc. So it's not going to take long to clean. I leave $5 a day. If you do it in lump amounts at the beginning or end it may all go to one cleaner and not all the people who cleaned your room over the days you were there

I usually tip a bit on the first day and the last. We're going to Disney World for 6 nights next week. The housekeepers there come in everyday and do additional cute things, like make animals out of towels haha. I'll probably tip $20 after the first night and $10 on check-out. I usually leave a note thanking them, too...I doubt if they even really care, but I like thanking people who perform a service for me.

I think about 3$ per day is reasonable I usually just leave it on the last day but sometimes a few dollars every day with a note so they know it's for them

I leave the do not disturb sign on constantly so they don't have to clean my room and can focus on their other rooms. I  also leave a tip and don't wreck the place. Maid usually only get 15 minutes to clean that whole room top to bottom even if it doesn't need it.
