Positive pregnancy test and bleeding

My last period 2 weeks ago was late by 3 days. Thought nothing of it. Then it ended and 3 days later I was spotting. This made me concerned. I spotted a few days then on the 4th day, I decided to take a pregnancy test, which was positive. I went to the doctor and had my blood drawn to confirm. Hcg count was only 17. Same day I started actually bleeding a little. Then the next day bleeding and spotting on and off with cramps like a regular period. I had my second blood draw today and I don't know the results yet. Has anyone ever experienced this? I was thinking it's prob a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, but I'm not sure. My bf and I have been trying the last few months to conceive so it would be sad for us if it were those.
