On Monday 16th May the day after my due date I woke up at 7.15am to use the toilet. I noticed I was having some cramping but I'd had this a few times in the weeks leading up to my due date, so I thought nothing of it and sat up in bed to see if they would go away and next thing i felt a gush.. My waters had broken! There was also green mucus with the clear liquid signalling the loss of my plug too. I rang the midwife clinic I planned on giving birth in and they asked me to come down to make sure it was amniotic fluid. By now -around 10 in the morning- I was having quite strong contractions that were about 3-4 minutes apart but only lasting 25-30 seconds. Once it was confirmed that it was my waters I was allowed to go back home to labour but was given a time limit of 24 hours to have my baby. I got home and laboured in the bath, breathing through my contractions until about 12 that night when my tired out body couldn't deal with the pain anymore. I went back to the clinic and they confirmed dehydrathion and low sugar..and also that I was only 1cm!! I was so disappointed this meant that I had to go to hospital at half 7 the following morning to help speed things along.. my water birth dream was gone. I got home and couldn't sleep through my contractions which were now 40-50 seconds long every 4 minutes. I sat up until we had to leave for hospital. I was shown to the induction ward and assesed. I was now only 3cm. A pessary was inserted at 9am on May 17th to help speed up effacement and dialation. My waters were continually gushing so this eventually fell out about 4 hours later. The midwife then inserted another.. and i then found out i was still only 3cm but fully effaced. I felt defeated. I was in serious frequent pain that wasnt doing anything for me because my body was so exhausted. No food or drinks would stay down. I honestly thought the pain was going to kill me and tgis was at 3cm just!! the second pessary then fell out 3 hours later during which time I had a shot of diamorphine. The midwife came back about an hour after that because I was begging for an epidural (even though I was completely against it & any other type of pain meds) I could only b given this if I was 4cm and able to go to labour & delivery ward. so she checked me, and I prayed i was at least at a 4.. and to her shock and mine I was 8cm! She then told me I was able to go to the 'home from home' birthing center attached which I accepted, my original plan may just happen now!
I got there in so much pain I asked for an epidural. I could barely sit, couldn't stand, couldn't lie on my side.. The pain was unimaginable. But there was no anaesthesiologist available so I settled for another shot of diamorphine at around 7.30pm. This thankfully made me drift in and out of sleep until I reached full dialation around 10.20pm. I was feeling severe pressure on my front but none in my back passage which apparently signals pushing. So I tried being on my hands and knees and swayingetc to see if the pressure would come..but it didnt. My midwife then decided to insert a catheter to see if thst was hindering things, but there was still no change all the pressure was in my front but I did find out I was fully dialated so decided to push anyway.. 40 minutes of pushing later and at 11.17pm on 17th May out came my beautiful baby girl weighing 7lbs15oz and 54cm long. Hyperemesis, long labour and stitches.. Sh was worth every bit! 😍😍
