Does mental health status affect parenting skills

I read a story about a woman who was a surrogate and found out the mother had mental health issues. So she went to court for custody and actually won!

The story isn't what made me mad though, because I don't know what exactly was wrong.

But there were people commenting on it saying "good the babies need a safe place" and BS like that.

I know plenty of women and men who struggle with mental illness. My husband being one of them. And while everyday isn't filled with rainbows and unicorns, he's not dangerous because of his ptsd or depression.

Do people really think that mental health issues cause bad parents? Because I completely disagree. It's not just something in their heads they can just get rid of like drugs. It's actually a chemical imbalance.
