Cultural appropriation and hair
So the other day I saw an article by buzzfeed titled 'Here Are A Few Things White People Seem To Be Really Confused About' (I'll include the link below). Anyways one part of the article talked about cornrows. Here is a sentence from the article accompanied by the picture it was with "So let me break it down: Whether the hair is braided in TWO braids or a THOUSAND braids, the style is still called cornrows."
This honestly just threw me off. I've been doing a hairstyle like this for many years now To me this is just two French braids in pigtails. So how am I putting corn rows in my hair? I don't know if I'm seriously misguided on braiding or whatever but I don't understand why this is cultural appropriation. So I just want to see other views. Do you consider this cultural appropriation?
Disclaimer: I do agree with some of the other posts on this article. I do believe Afros and the cutting designs into hair have been around for a long time, and was and still is a part of black culture. So don't think I'm just knocking anyone down. There are valid points to this article.
