Who pays for baby showers?

The mama-to-be, or the person throwing it for her? I've actually never gone to a baby shower before bc for most of my adult life I've been living abroad in a country where this event is not practiced. My older sister back home in the U.S. is pregnant (about 4 months along now) and my younger sister and I were thinking of throwing her a baby shower if she wants one (we haven't asked her yet).

So how does it all work, exactly? Who pays for what? What things besides food and decorations should we prepare? What do we do once guests arrive? haha obviously we're total newbies at this...

Whoever hosts the shower is responsible for all planning and expenses.  I think at least having finger foods for guests and maybe playing a few games is pretty standard.

Whoever throws it covers the cost. You'll want to prepare food and have decorations. It's common to have games with prizes for the winners. Also a favor of some kind for all the guests. Keep in mind cost of invitations and postage for those as well. T can get pricey, but keeping it simple and doing things DIY can help cut costs. Also preparing the food yourselves rather than catering.

I'm splitting it. My two friends are throwing it but I bought all the invitations and got all the game cards printed and i paid for the candy and jar for the "guess how many" game and I'll make some of the decorations and buy the plates and stuff. I know they are taking care of food and all the other decor. But i just felt so bad thinking about them paying for it all, especially because I make way more than one of them and the other is letting us use her house and pool!

Usually the person throwing it, but today now you see most of the parents to be paying for it even if someone else is helping host. So really it just all depends

If your throwing it you should pay for it, atleast where I'm from. My church and mom payed for mine since they were hosting.
