SPANGLISH??

Question

OK, So my husband and I were debating over what language to teach our daughter first, (still pregnant, not born yet)... we both are Hispanic, from different countries. I don't want my baby to get confused with trying to learn both languages at the same time and at the end only speak spanglish... what do you recommend?

Children raised in bilingual households are able to effectively distinguish the languages. They might initially be slower to speak their first words, but they will certainly figure it out and will benefit from both languages.

Babies are so amazing in the fact that you can speak to them in multiple languages and their brains can compartmentalize them all and keep them seperate.
Plus they learn the most in the firat 5 years so teach away 💪

My husband and I speak Spanish and English fluently but his younger siblings aren't all that fluent in Spanish so they speak Spanglish around her and  she understands both . We also watch tv in both languages she can distinguish between the two and will answer you in the language you talk to her in . She'll be 3 in November

I've always heard they are more likely to learn a second language before like the age of 4 (I think it is) I would do it at the same time if I was bilingual.

It's best to work on learning both languages at the same time. He/she may be slower to speak their first words but will gain rapidly after that (especially once they hit school age)

I'll be teaching my son German right along with English. I'll be getting a variety of books in German and a few movies. I'll encourage both at home and in public, it's definitely best to teach them when they're young 😊

My aunt is Mexican and my Uncle American. They both speak fluently in both languages. My two year old cousin has been raised with both and shes learning great. She's actually extremely smart for her age.

There are studies which have shown that babies raised in a bilingual environment outperform monolingual children by 10 months. My baby will be raised bilingual, simultaneously. By the time they are in school they definitely are able to differentiate between the 2 languages, and know when it is appropriate to speak each (or Spanglish!).

My nephew is being raised bilingual; he's 15 months and doesn't say many words yet but definitely understands both English and Spanish (we also do some sign language with him and he answers no matter which language you ask the question in).
