How do I know He's there?

Question

I believe in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, of course. I've been reading my scriptures daily and saying my prayers morning and night. But sometimes when I pray I almost feel like I'm just talking to myself. How do I know I'm talking to Him and feel that? Yes, I can listen to what others say telling me they know He's there but I want to know for myself. I've prayed about it but I just don't know yet. Any input?

I struggle all the time. But it helps when I just keep it real with Him. It also helps if I'm on my knees or butt rather than lying down. I try to ask for personal things or get a confirmation from a choice and I have to do it repeatedly. Take the advice of the other commenters, I read them all and that made me feel the spirit. My husband and I taught the 4 year olds in our last ward. And we had a girl in our class whose mom had committed suicide about a year before. I had a soft spot in my heart for her. But one Sunday she wanted to say the prayer and when she prayed and I was in awe from her. She was literally having a conversation with her Father in Heaven. It had nothing to do with our lesson or one of those generic prayers you hear the little kids say. She was sitting there having a conversation. It taught me something about how I pray because I also don't feel him there all the time when I pray. But since then I've tried praying like her and that has helped so much.

Sometimes I start prayers with "today was a hard day..." Or "today was a great day..." And try to talk to Him like he's a friend that I talk to every day.

God talks to us in many ways. I've heard it said "we speak to God through prayer and he speaks to us through the scriptures". That can be very true, I've often felt him there when I read. But I think he also speaks to us in many other ways. Through other people for example. Or through music, which is a big one for me. And never be afraid to tell God exactly how you feel. They're have been times where I've said "God, I feel like you don't even care about me. What gives?" I didn't get any immediate answer, but the next day I felt his love very strongly.

I talk to him like he's literally right there in the room but with my head bowed and arms folded.

One time, when I was struggling with anxiety and depression, I felt like he had abandoned me, like I couldn't feel his love anymore. For some reason, after I said my prayer, I broke out in a quiet song of "I Feel My Saviors Love". I broke down crying because I could feel the spirit so strong and HF's love for me. It was his way of telling me. ❤️
