Army Breakup

My boyfriend and I broke up cuz I shipped off to basic in the army. It was a mutual thing and we both knew it would happen eventually. But even with that, we both fell Hard for each other. He's my first and I've never loved a guy or told a guy I've loved him before, with him, I did with him. Before I left, his best friend died in a car crash. And now I'm gone. He's not handling things good and won't even talk to me. I'm not sure what exactly to do. I don't want to bug him but I want to make sure he's doing alright. Idk if I should just give up on the weird break up relationship thing and stop trying or if I should keep trying. Any thoughts?
