How to speed things along?

Ok so I'm in early labor but my contractions arent getting closer together or stronger...my midwife said that at this point they won't stop my contractions and I'll just have to wait it out. Is there any way to speed things along? I was hoping they'd stop my contractions but since they won't I might as well speed things along? Obviously I want to be safe and I don't want to drink or eat anything weird...I have a birthing ball?
