Birth defects?

So I'm 8 weeks pregnant , I had my first appointment two weeks ago and one of the counseling educators told me that unprotected sex with my partner can cause birth defects on my baby because of the sperm . So I'm just confused because I've done research and it says that it's normal and healthy. Could this be true or ?

Are they talking about if he's been infected with the Zika virus? I think you missed a part of it.

There is this disease being passed from mosquitos to ppl. And if someone contracts it, it can be passed sexually. What sucks if besides some of the mild symptoms one may not even know that they have it. Some doctors says that when it's passed whether sexually or the bite itself it can cause birth defects. I would say jus get tested and take precaution when it comes to mosquitos. Also Google zika viruses and pregnancy. Research.

It seems like a lot of info is left out of this question. Are you saying that the father has a family history of genetic abnormalities? If so, yes it is possible. More than likely when you are 10 weeks or so, you may be asked if you want to take the genetic blood test to check. You may be monitored by u/s scans as well throughout your pregnancy.

My doctors office has signs everywhere about Zia virus and that it can be passed during unprotected sex...maybe that's what she was referring to?
