Home birth vs hospital birth: How did you deliver your baby?

Love the idea of a home birth but have had a couple of friends with normal no risk pregnancies end up in scary emergency situations (one whose placenta spontaneously detached during labor, the other the cord was around baby's neck and he suddenly went into distress during labor), if they needed to drive to a hospital baby might not have made it. I really hate hospitals but would be too nervous at home in the small chance of a problem.

I originally wanted a home birth but my midwives only worked with a hospital. I always believed really strongly that my body would know what to do and that, since being pregnant isn't the same as being sick, I didn't need a hospital. In the end I had a handful of complications that actually DID need hospital assistance. If I had been home I think I would have ended up being rushed to the hospital for an emergency c section. Being in the hospital meant I could have a couple of interventions that all let me deliver vaginally, so I'm grateful. Id never been in the hospital before either, but I was extremely pleased with the entire experience. Very baby friendly and they respected everything we asked for.

Hospital though I regret it. My experience was a bad one and I am still suffering emotionally from it 5 months later...wasn't sure about a homebirth since I was a first time mom and was nervous. Really liked the idea of a birth center, but the one in my state is 1+ hour drive and didnt want to risk such a drive. For my next child I will consider a home water birth. Dont think I will return to the hospital.
