Population Control - Not Government Related

So "back in the day" we used to have things like plagues and early death rates to keep our population down. Now we have mass shootings and texting while driving.

I feel like when we "cure" a problem we often leave room for another problem to manifest itself. So as terrible as all these unessesary deaths are, is it just the "modern way" of some form of self-inflicted population control?
