Bringing up "the talk" with daughter when?

Question

At what age did you talk to your daughter about periods and such? And did you bring up sex too or wait for that conversation? I want my daughter to be prepared and knowledgeable but I don't want her to lose her innocence too soon either... She's 8 will be 9 in January she isn't showing any "signs" of hormonal changes that I can really notice her attitude is kinda off I think that could be because of hormones but she isn't yet having breast development or discharge...

My mom is a nurse. She left books around all the time for me to look at (age appropriate). I don't remember not knowing at a biological level how babies were created and I think it lead me to have a very open relationship with her (not graphic, just open). I'm far more knowledgeable about my body and not ashamed to ask questions about how it works.

It should be an ongoing conversation about their bodies and sexuality from the time they start asking questions. If you're waiting for one talk you've missed the boat.

I learned about sex and menstruation gradually during my growing up... First when I read a children's book about where baby's come from, that explained sex like men and women come together like two puzzle pieces and had cute little sperms with faces and cute eggs like yellow suns. 
And later I saw my mum changing pads on toilet and she explained about period... First only that it comes every month and is normal.
When my classmates started talk about sex my mum explained more. I don't think it made me loose my innocence. Sex isn't something dirty or bad, it's natural.

I asked a question when I was 7 bc I seen it in a movie and my mom told Me about periods then but she didn't have the sex talk until 9 or 10 i still hadn't developed so it was ok

I started developing in about 4th grade (about 10 years old) so my mom gradually started talking to me about my body. Just simple stuff like bras, shaving underarms, deodorant, etc. Probably the year after that i started having discharge so we opened up that conversation which led to a period discussion. I ended up getting my period the year after which then opened up the sex talk for me. So it was all just about baby steps and she also got me a couple books and always reassured me that i could always ask her questions.

Don't do it too young, my mom tried explaining it to me when I was in elementary school. She took me up to her room, shut the door and had "the talk" with me. I was very uncomfortable and embarrassed, also I didn't understand. I think it ruined our relationship, I didn't even feel comfortable telling her when I first got my period. I told my older sister because my mom was so weird. I don't have any kind of relationship with her now.

I got my period at 11, so I was glad my mom approached me with the talk at age 10. You can keep it quite clinical in terms of explaining body parts and her period, etc. and go light on the sex aspect for the first conversation, and then once she actually gets her period, expand the conversation to include full info on sex if that's easier for you-- and that way you're not bombarding her with too much info at once.

My mom waited to have the full talk until I went through the maturation program at school. Starting in fourth or fifth grade they took a couple hours in class and explained the female body and how it matures to the girls and and do the same with the boys. Then we all learned a more watered down version of each other.

He school had to send home a permission form for parents to sign so my mom knew about it. When I got home that day from school she sat me down and reviewed the info and asked if I had any questions. That was about it ...
