Can anal sex cause permanent damage?

I read that anal sex can cause permanent damage if it is not done right. By right I mean using lube, not saliva, but like actual lubricant that you buy at the store. I've only done it a few times using saliva (I know, gross) but I didn't really know any better until I read about that online, now I'm scared! What should I do?
