Help! Advice needed from Veteran Moms!

I had my 38 week appointment today.
I have GD and baby is measuring a smidge over 9lbs. I am at least 1cm dialated right now but she said I am softening.
Baby is chunky in the torso.
Today, we discussed options. They are suggesting c-section to avoid risking shoulder dystoscia (sp?) but said there was no harm in trying for vaginal besides the risks of baby getting stuck and potentially losing oxygen to the brain (cerebral palsy risks, etc..)
So we decided Friday (the 15th) I would go in for Cervidil (is that a pill or lancets?) and they said if I change my mind before the Pitocin on Saturday morning, to make sure I do not eat and tell my on-call OB that I want a c-section instead.
I'm terrified of him getting any type of brain damage but was not told how high the risk is- just that it's higher than normal.
Boyfriend and Mom both said do a c-section to just make it easier but part of me feels like I want to at least experience some of it.
Not sure what to do. I know it's a personal choice and I want what's best but, am I really missing out on a lot if I do a c-section?
