Period is late !!

My periods are regular and it was suppose to come on Tuesday July 12. My period is now three days late and I'm kind of freaking out. My most fertile day was July 3 and I had sex July 2. I took a pregnancy test July 11 and it came back negative. Should I take a test once my period had been a week or two weeks late to make sure the results are right ? Or should I test sooner? Also, I stopped taking my birth control the month of June. I've read that once you stop taking the pills that you could miss a month. Has this every happened to anyone ? I'm curious to know if I actually am pregnant or if it's because I am no longer taking birth control.
