Tongue piercing?

Question

So when I was like, 5 I told my mom's friend who works in body art that I wanted my tongue pierced. He laughed and said he'd buy me a tongue piercing when I'm 18, if I still wanted one. Flash forward to this summer, (I turn 18 in October) he calls my mom and asks if I still wanted one. I had no recollection of this happening, and as of right now am still on the fence about it. Can any of y'all with tongue piercings offer some advice?

Keep it clean while healing,  get plastic balls because others will break ur teeth...  Ur man will love it and small children think their hilarious

The first three days of healing suck but if you limit how much you talk, it heals quickly! I absolutely loved mine. If you ever want to take it out, it heals fast. Use plastic balls so that it's more sensitive on your teeth. Getting the piercing itself is not painful!

It's hard to learn to talk with it in properly and the first few days are bad. The actual piercing itself isn't a horrible pain though. I had mine for 4 years before taking it out. I still mess up my words because of it. I liked it though.

First time I got it done it swelled a lot. I took it out and got it done again a few months later. Nothing wrong with it really. However, I played with my barbell so much that it gave me headaches. I highly suggest plastic beads vs metal. Change plastic ones every few months or at least sterilize them as they get stinky

update: I physically cannot get my tongue pierced, because I have 2 extra veins on the underside of my tongue

I love my tongue piercing! Get metal balls any time you get new ones cuz the plastic ones break so easy. It didn't hurt getting it done but it hurt and was a little swollen for the rest of the day. By far my favorite piercing and the easiest piercing

I would say if you're on the fence then not to do it. I absolutely wanted mine done, so on my 19 birthday I got it with my friend who wanted her nose done. It has not had any affect on my ability to get and hold a job in management and in a hospital setting. 98% of people don't even realize I have it done. I also apprenticed at a tattoo parlor as a piercer and the tongue piercing is becoming less and less of a fad. Dermals and various facial/ear piercings have grown quite popular as of late. No one associates a tongue piercing with sexual activities/preference/capabilities and if they do it shows their lack of maturity or their character for degrading those who do get it done. I forget I have mine done all the time. As someone else said, acrylic ball ends are recommended after your healing is complete. Just the balls though, not the bar. For most people the swelling goes down over a course of a few days. Avoid talking a lot and eating rough/chunky and acidic foods and drinks. The tongue piercing is one of the fastest healing piercings as far as it closing up. I've had mine done for about 10 years and if I take mine out for a week or so it's already begun the healing process and I have to push the bar through to "repierce" it. Overall it's fairly easy to take care of. If you have questions/concerns about it I'd talk to the piercer you're going to have doing it.

Your tongue will swell and it'll be very painful while it heals. I couldn't even talk.   It doesn't hurt when it's being pierced though. 
I had a vein in the middle so my tongue piercing was slanted a bit - which kind of affected the way I talked too. 
The ring fell out one day and I neglected putting another one in and so, it closed. 
That's my experience. I wish I still had it :/

If you are on the fence about it, then I'd say no. If you try to find a job later, it may mess up your chance of getting hired depending on their appearance guidelines. It's not a painful piercing. But take it from someone who's boyfriend is a tattoo artist and I am around a tattoo/piercing studio alot.... I have multiple tattoos and piercings and I think tongue piercings are trashy and usually we think we young people come to get one or any kind of gential/nipple piercings.... that they are young and trying to hard to state their sexual independent now. I wouldn't.

I've had mine for ten years and I love it. I've never had any issues with it and I don't think most people even notice it, I honestly forget it's there most of the time. If you're on the fence about it though, I'd wait. It's not like you have to make a decision right this minute and it sounds like it wasn't something you were even thinking about before it was brought up. But it's not like you couldn't just take it out if you decided you didn't like it.
