Does religion "close mind" people?

I personally think most people who are so judgemental on everything, from the way a person is dressed to the most controversial subject in here - abortion, are very religious people who can't accept other opinions. I'm not saying everyone who is religious is like this, but from what I've seen during my life, religion plays a big fact into someone's mentality.
