Period or just spotting?

So today I was supposed to get my period. I NEVER spot between periods, in fact the only time I did spot was when I first had my IUD inserted. So I started today, or so I though, but it's SO light that I'd say it's literally just spotting.. But bright red... Does this happen for anyone else as their period? Or is my period yet to come?
