Disposable Vs reusable nappies

So my partner and I are leaning towards the idea of reusable nappies, has anybody had experience with them and could advise on whether to go for it or use disposables? This will be our first baby and were pretty clueless about all the different products out there. Reusable nappies seem cheaper long term and more eco friendly, whereas disposable nappies seem a little more convenient as you don't need to carry dirty ones around with you if baby makes a mess while you're out, but they're so expensive! We're a pretty low budget household. Any advice would be great (:
