Cloth diapers?

Question

Where to even start? Still ttc but looking at all options for the future and I'm interested in cloth diapers..but it feels a little overwhelming..inserts, covers, all in one etc.

So..ladies (or gentlemen if they're are any saavy dads on here) brands? Styles, how to's, give me the good, the bad and the ugly in regards to this.

Start with joining the FB group Fluff Love & CD Science. Then while you wait to be approved browse their website: Fluffloveuniversity.com.  They have tons of great and accurate information. You will learn all about the different types of diapers and go from there. Also, look up Obbsandlala on youtube. Go to her channel and look under the " Playlists" tab. She has an entire playlist dedicated to cloth diapers. She's extremely helpful as well.

My one piece of advice is to STAY AWAY from any detergents labeled as "cloth safe". They are literally made up of softeners and in order to even come close to getting soiled diapers clean, you would need to use way more than the recommended amount. Same goes for homemade "detergents". You can use most mainstream detergents. I'll leave a few pictures below for help/references.

As far as brands, there's so many different ones including many different wahms that make beautifully crafted cloth diapers. A few of my favorite are: Funky Fluff, Grovia ONE,  SmartBottoms, Sunbaby and MiniMoosDiapers (wahm on Etsy and fb). However, because every baby is different and not every diaper is made the same, what works for me or someone else may or may not work for you and vice versa.

Other popular brands are: Bumgenius, Grovia aio, Alvas, Glowbug.

Your make it or break it will all depend on your wash routine. Whats great about that Fb group I mentioned above is that they will help you set up a wash routine specific to your washer and your detergent wants/needs. I will also attach the questionnaire you will need to fill out to get a wash routine set up.

Also, if you plan on breastfeeding, there is no rinsing/scraping involved before washing since breastfed poo is water soluable.  However, once you introduce solids or if you use formula, then you have to rinse/scrape your diapers before washing.

We've been using cloth exclusively now for 8 months with no problems and will never look back.

I am going to use Flip diapers! They are known as a hybrid or All-in-two. I like the idea because I can buy a few covers and lots of liners. It is much cheaper than the pocket diapers where every time they are soiled you have to change the insert AND cover while with the hybrids you only have to change the insert unless the cover is actually soiled as well.
So I will only need to buy 10 covers and I will have about 30 inserts on hand, I should only need to do laundry every other day with this batch. Rather than the 24-30 covers and 24-30 inserts I would need for Pocket diapers (the covers are also more expensive than the inserts). But some think pockets or All-in-ones are more convenient so you have to figure what sounds best for you. I didn't want all in one's (the cover and lining inserts are sewn in together, closest to being like disposables) because they take a long time to dry as one unit and because of the cover you can't throw the liner in the drier. The Hybrids I am using I can just hang the covers to dry and throw the liners in the drier as they take quite a while to dry by hanging I am told. We are also using cloth wipes and will use a solution in a spray bottle to wet them for wiping. Good luck on finding something thatworks for you 😊

I love them. The only thing I hate is how bulky they are.
