Midwife???

Question

I want to have a natural birth, in the hospital with someone who will let me do it my way. I want a midwife for that reason. But I also want to have all the proper tests done and ultrasounds at my appointments. How can I have it both ways?? and what should I be looking for?? I know different midwives have different levels of certification. Whatcha kind can do this for me??

My midwife works out of a hospital as well as in a practice with an ob just in case I were to need him. I would suggest asking a local doula for advice on who was best thats how I found mine ( a Facebook group)  .

Find a midwife that is a certified nurse practitioner. Mine works in an office with an OB and she runs her practice the same way she just does more focusing on natural deliveries, but she does deliver at hospitals.the easiest thing to do would be call up your local midwives and ask if they deliver at home or in hospitals. Pick the one that delivers at hospitals :) good luck!

Midwives (CNMs) do all the proper testing or get it done by someone. But the most important thing to have a natural hospital birth is to choose the hospital. I found the hospital I wanted to deliver at and then selected midwives that deliver there.

The key is to find a Certified Nurse Midwife, NOT a lay midwife. A Nurse midwife is basically a nurse practitioner with a masters degree and delivers in hospitals. I use a Nurse Midwife and LOVE her. She spends more time with me and it very available. (I have her cell phone number for after hours questions). But she understands the medical side very well also and isn't afraid of interventions, should they be necessary. I get an ultrasound at every appointment if I want it. I'd go this route if I were you.

The OB I've been seeing my whole life is actually part of a practice with midwives on staff. I'm seeing all of the midwives at least once so I'm familiar with all of them as they take turns on call for births. I won't see an OB unless there's a complication. Because they're all in the sameness practice, they have access to all the same equipment and tests.

I use my OB, everything normal (routine testing, ultrasound, etc) but I also have a Doula (like a midwife) she's there for me for the natural aspect and support. She'll be there at the birth, help coach, answers questions in between visits, gives helpful in information on how to go as naturally as I choose. Highly recommend a doula!

I had both. My first pregnancy was to the books and uncomplicated. My midwives accepted me and in the second trimester they found that I had rare antibodies in my blood that could attack the baby. My OB said that we could do shared care instead of a complete transfer of care. It was actually a good experience. In my opinion both are great, but midwives will definitely go above and beyond!

Midwives deal with low risk patients, so they run all the same test and have ultrasounds just like an OBGYN. They will generally transfer your care if they feel you are high risk, so you really have little to worry about. I would interview the ones in your area and see who is in line with your ideals. In my case, there is only one place with midwives in my area so I didn't have a choice.

I'm pretty sure midwifes do everything the doctors do test and ultrasound wise, they're more one on one and don't walk in and out as much and are there more than a doctor would be. I have one for that reason and because where I live you need a midwife to do water birth

I have a NP midwife. She works out of our local hospital. You might want to research the hospitals to see if they have any midwives on staff. Those would be the ones that are nurses that would be able to get the tests and  ultrasounds you are looking for.
