Where I am from (Saskatchewan Canada) the trend is to have a baby shower after the birth. People don't feel the obligation to buy anything big (cribs) or anything expensive. You get tons of little things like clothes, and baby toys/gadgets and guest then can buy gender specific gifts.

I say 6-7 months because you should know the sex of the baby by then and you can actually start buying stuff
