Long distance relationship success stories?

My boyfriend and I are freshmen in college on diff sides of the country 😖 but trying to make it work! I know we re just 18 and we re making sure to not hold each other back and let each other experience and grow, but I see myself marrying this man in the future! Its rare to last through LDRs, but if it's true you've got to hold on to it right?

We started dating when we were both 18 and in college. He went to school 13 hours away. We dated for two years and got married the month after he graduated. It definitely sucked, but I think it had benefits as well. One, I still got to experience college and spend time with friends and all that without being lost in just spending time with him. Two, we really got to talk to and get to know each other, because it's not like you can go to a movie or anything. Pretty much all your interaction is communication, so you have to learn to do it well. I feel like we knew each other better than just about any other friends we had in relationships at the time and still talk to and communicate better than most (I'm obviously biased, but I feel that way).

Make the times you can see each other count and let him know you're thinking about him. I love to cook would occasionally mail packages of his favorite cookies or other things. He loved the cookies, but appreciated the thought and effort even more.

Now we've been married 8.5 years and just had our first son last month. Thinking about our long distance relationship when we started out 11 years ago makes me smile. If you're both invested, you'll find a way to make it work.

I started dating my husband in high school. He was two years ahead of (I was a sophomore and he was a senior). When he graduated, he joined the Military and went to basic training about 6 months after graduation. After basic training he went to tech school across the state. It was very hard to not get to see him especially with me still going to school. After 3 months of tech school he got orders for 3 years in Italy. When he got his orders, my junior was almost over. The military gave him a week to say goodbye to family and friends. It was still very hard to see him especially with school during the day. After that week he shipped off to Italy and I didn't see him again for 9 months when he came home for Christmas. At this point has was halfway through senior year and he asked me to marry him and I said yes. My family wasn't very excited with the news but they supported me. After 2 weeks home for Christmas, he went back overseas. I planned the wedding while doing an engineering internship and working on finals. It was very stressful. I was so worried about marrying someone I'd never even spent a full day or night with. We got married 10 days after my 18th birthday when he came home for 3 weeks. Of course he then had to go back overseas while I worked on getting all the proper paperwork to move overseas (you need way more than just a passport lol) so for the first 6 months of our marriage, we lived on separate continents! It was very difficult and a lot of trust is involved but if the person is the right one for you, it'll work. I have now been happily living with my husband for about 8 months. Definitely worth all the waiting.

I did a ldr for years! We were only across a state but I was in high school and played sports while he went away for his freshman year of college so we never saw each other, visits didn't really happen often. Communication is key. He called me at least once a day and texted me throughout the day. He always told me what he was doing, I never even had to ask. He wanted it to work as much as I did and that's what you need or else it won't work! It's so tough and I spent so much time crying and missing him. It sucked watching everyone else get to spend time with their boyfriend but it was so worth it. We did long distance for three years. We've now been together a total of 9 years, living together 3 years and are engaged. If you two love each other it's so worth it!!

My husband and I were LDR for 7 years. We only had 5 visits within that time, which was killer! But we Skyped constantly and our visits would be for a couple months at a time. Lord help anyone who tried to sperate us during those visits. He lived in New Zealand, but I was from the East Coast of the US. It was incredibly rough, but we did it, and it was worth every second.

My husband and I were long distance from day one.  Meet online, he is American and I am Canadian.  We were living in our home countries from 06-11 when I immigrated to the USA and we got married.  Still happily married with a baby girl!  Long distance can work, but it is very, very hard.
