after birth smell

Anybody else having awful smelling discharge/blood after giving birth? The smell is unbearable at times. Also my husband said after I gave birth, when he was on his way home to get more clothes for him and I to bring back to the hospital, he had the awful smell on him too. Is this a normal thing?
